NaNoWriMo 2006

NaNoWriMo 2006: Fall Like Rain

My latest project, which I am still in the process of writing until now. :-o Work is getting in the way — boo!

This is my biggest project yet, my first chicklit. I was originally planning to write a spy novel then a fantasy novel, but I got influenced by the first Christian chicklit I read, Dreaming in Black and White by Laura Jensen Walker. Then I knew it — chicklit, Filipino Catholic version!

Why? Well, I like reading chicklits, plus all the local chick literati I have seen out in the market all concentrate too much on the physical aspects — love life, shopping, and yes, sex. Although we can’t take away love life and shopping in a chicklit novel, there’s so much more to talk about than that, yes? So that’s my project: to write a wholesome chicklit novel that does not contain sex, or is laden with materialistic wants. :P Possible!

Current Word Count: 57,259 words
Summary:

Rain de Castro is a 24-year-old technical writer, and 24/7 on-call technical support engineer for an outsourcing company in Makati. She juggles all the responsibilities she has in her job and maintains a good record, even if she ends up not sleeping for a few nights. She lives in a condo in Ortigas with her older brother. She is a devout Catholic, reading the Bible every day and has set her daily prayer time at 6:00am. She’s pretty much your normal woman with a go-getter attitude and who has pretty much everything going great with her life.

And then of course, something happens.

Rain’s brother gets married and during the wedding, she meets her cousins who she hasn’t seen in ages and she realizes that she doesn’t know them at all, unlike her brother who seems to be friends with all of them. What is she missing?

Rain’s cousin lives with her, and she looked forward for more than a month of bonding, but why does everything Lissa do annoy her to death?

Rain’s best girlfriends are back in Manila (Meah from the US and Faith from some remote region in South America), but instead of kicking back and relaxing with both of them, something seems to be wrong: Meah is hiding something from them and Faith is pressured by her high-rep boyfriend.

Rain’s best guy friend (and ex-first love) comes back from hiding (with his girlfriend, as Rain last remembers) and confusion rules as Mark does some things she doesn’t understand.

The job she loves? Well, she’s starting to feel tired from all of it. Is it time to let go of that high-profile rush job and seek something else?

And why does it seem like it’s raining all the time?

I have a couple of excerpts posted during the duration of the NaNoWriMo 2006:

I hope I can finish this within the year. Who knows, this might be my published work yet. ;) Let’s see. :P
